1967 Ford Mustang
When it comes to good old American muscle, a few cars come to mind instantly, not the least of which is the 1967 Mustang. The Mustang first rolled off the assembly line in 1964 ½, it was used in the James Bond movie Goldfinger, which was the first movie appearance for this little muscle car. For the next couple of years Ford had a corner on the market, however by 1967 the tables were turned as Chevy released the Camaro and Pontiac showed up with the Firebird. In preparation for the coming competition, Ford took the time to completely restyle the Mustang. Up until this particular year there had been no reason to beef up the little sports car, but with the Barracuda and others preparing to hit the streets the war was on to provide large motors in small racy bodies.
1967 - A Great Year For The Ford Mustang
1967 was the first major redesign for the Ford Mustang. There were a few notable changes such as the enlarged grille opening, horizontal and vertical bars, two and a half inch increase to the front track, concave rear with bigger taillights and smaller side scoops that were painted to match the vehicle. Even though there were several changes to the body as a whole Ford still wisely offered the coupe, fastback and convertible options.
1967 Ford Mustang Notables
When one thing ends, something else generally begins, such as the motor size and other options for the 1967 Ford Mustang. This year would herald the last days of the 289 Hi Po and the first release of the 390 and the 428, which was available in the Shelby models. This would also be the last year for the Mustang GTA and the FORD block lettering. Block lettering would not return to the Ford lineup until 1974, definitely information worth noting if you are trying to determine the authenticity of a 1967 Ford Mustang!
Famous 67 Mustang's
If you have never seen the 2000 remake of the movie Gone in 60 Seconds you should really check it out. The star of the show, Elanor and not Nicolas Cage, was a reproduction of the 1967 Shelby GT 500. Several clones were created for this fast-paced movie from 67-68 fastbacks; the first clone was later sold for a whopping $194, 400. Though the cars were authentic in body the undercarriage and suspension were all modern.
Rare 67 Mustangs
Shelby and Mustang worked together for many years and in 1967, there is one model you will have to pay a very high price to attain. This is the 1967 Shelby Super Snake; there were a total of one of these cars created out of a proposed run of 50. Apparently the price tag was simply too steep for consumers in the late 60's. The one model created was driven by Carrol Shelby and packed in an amazing 520 hp out of a 427 medium riser with aluminum heads. This car has made appearances once or twice in the last few years at online auction, but the reserve was not matched.
Final Thoughts on the 1967 Ford Mustang
If you come across a true blue 1967 Ford Mustang, you have found a vehicle that could be worth a good deal of money, especially if you have one of the rare Shelby's or an all original automobile. Look for telltale signs like some of those listed above and check VIN's to be absolutely certain. Even a less than perfect model might be restorable.
