More Details about the 66 Ambassador:

The 1966 Ambassador 990 had a standard roof rack that you could carry cargo on. Very handy for the family vacation. The year 1966 was the only year that this particular roof rack design was on the Ambassador. The 66 also had two-tone paint.

The "Cross Country" model identification nameplate was on the used below the door handle. It was also like that on the station wagons. There was an optional rear side hinged rear door.

The front headlight design on the 1966 990 Country Wagon was 2 on top of each other on the far ends close to the sides.

This car had the adjustable tilt steering wheel. This made it more comfortable for the driver to handle the steering wheel based on the size of the person. It allows a person to change the angle of the steering wheel. The adjustable tilt wheel was not developed by AMC but by inventor Edward James Lobdell, who made it available to General Motors in 1963. At first this was intended to be a luxury option on automobiles, but became more common as time went by. In 1966, American Motor Corp. added it to the Cross Country model.

The 1966 Cross Country 990 had the 327 CID (cubic inch displacement) (5.36 L) V8 engine. The 327ci engine was very similar to the past incarnations of the 287 ci engine, however it displaced 327 cubic inches because of a 4.0 in bore increase. Additioanlly, the 327 motor had hydraulic valve lifters.

This car also had individual reclining front seats that were easily adjustable by rider and driver. The interior also had a nice looking instrument panel with AM/FM radio for listening enjoyment. No telling how many Beatles tunes had been played on one of these radios.

It had the enlongated back side glass found in many old wagons.

The speedometer went up to 120 mph. Imagine going that fast in this wagon?
