I happen to love the old Ambassador station wagons. Call me a classic car nut if you will... but this old wagon seems to bring back good memories of family trips in this kind of old station wagon.

Ambassadors station wagons have lots of room and can bring back good family memories. It is not your typical classic car to take to the local classic car show, but it can be turned into a real nice car to take around ot the shows. I would like to have something like Clark Griswold's Wagon Queen Family Truckster from National Lampoon's Vacation movie...sweet car!

History of the 71 Ambassador

After it was redesigned from the previous year, the 1971 Ambassador car line was changed only very slightly. American Motors Corporation marketed this car by saying that, "If you had to compete with GM, Ford and Chrysler, what would you do?" The answer seems to come to this smaller automobile maker by including a lot more features and incentives for consumers to enjoy as compared to what was being put out by the big three auto companies in Detroit.

The Ambassador models in 1971 has more features than ever before in the standard features. They dropped the base model that had no name. The 1971 Ambassador then offered the sedan-only DPL trim line as the base model. Then they developed the innovative Brougham trim line for the SST models. Both SST and Brougham models were offered as sedans, hardtop coupes, and station wagons.

The DPL Sedans had 258 cu in (4.2 L) able to churn out 150 horsepower. This particular engine had an inline-six and had seven main bearings. Every one of the Broughams and SSTs had the 304ci V8 motor with 210 hp standard. They had 2 360Ci motors that were optional. One had a 2-barrel and there was a high compression 4 barrel. Eventually however the AMX 390 motor gave way to the 401 V8.

There were a few cosmetic changes done on the 71 Ambassador line. For instance, the tail lights on the hardtop coupes & sedans in 1971 still were from one side to the other of the car body, however the dual backup lights were moved from the center. Also it had a second pair of parking lights added. On the front, it did have a new fascia. Headlights had their own chrome. The grill had a little different look with a rectangular surround that gave it a sharper look.

The 1971 station wagon did not change in some places like the rear end, however it did have the new optional wood side trim, on the upper part of its side. The wood side sloped down to the front wheel house, much like Buick Skylark's side "sweep spear" look.

All the cars on AMCs line in 1971 had BorgWarner's  "Shift-Command"  automatic transmission.

Ambassadors as base models were very commonly bought as fleet packages by large buyers such as by taxi companies, police, government, and various other businesses. The low price of the base model 4-door sedans made them very enticing for the large fleet buyers. Most of the 1971 police cars made from Ambassadors had the 360 or 401 ci motors, and were often used as police cruisers.
