History of the 66 Chevelle

As soon as the 1966 Chevelle first came out, it had a innovative design that emphasized a brand new rounded appearance. The Sixty six Chevelle front fender had a much more aggressive design in which the top pushed forwards to give it a lot more robust appearance. The back fenders had an upwards bulge that offered this unique Chevelle it's well-known coke-bottle style. So many people are essentially enamored by the simple charm of this classic muscle car's design. In many muscle car collectors' circles, the 1966 Chevelle is regarded as just about the most beloved classic muscle car concepts of all time.

Looking at the car's front end, 1966 Chevelle's broad grille was a cutting edge change in the Chevelle that was extremely popular and undoubtedly added to the aura of the Chevelle selection. Muscle car consumers of the sixties treasured it. The hardtop models had the curved side windows and "flying buttress" roofline that muscle car lovers really love. Moreover, this was the year in which the hardtop Sport Sedan was integrated into the Malibu series. The Chevelles continued to offer the 300, 300 Deluxe, and Malibu trim.

The cutting edge Chevelle was extremely popular in 1966. In fact, 412,155 Chevelles were manufactured and of all the Chevelles built, 72,272 were Super Sports. The demand from consumers was way higher than the 65 Chevelle.

Of the types of body styles in the 66 Chevelle, there was the 2 door sports coupe, 4 door sports coupe, 2 door convertible, and the 4 door station wagon. No more in the lineup was the 2-door station wagon from the prior year. Sales was minimal for this car and so it was terminated for the 1966 model year for the Chevelle line.

The 1966 Chevelle SS 396 was a monster. It had a standard 325 horsepower turbo-jet V-8 with 396 cubic inches of displacement. The 1966 Chevelle SS included distinctive fender moldings, twin simulated hood air-intakes, and a darkened grill with very sharp looking SS 396 badges. On the back fenders you will notice the Super Sport script conspicuously displayed. It looks excellent. The SS package option in the 66 Chevelle likewise had the absolutely amazing looking mag-type wheel covers and nylon red striped tires. This was pretty much it for the SS options. Bucket seats were optional in this car. Most included vinyl bench seats.

For the power-hungry, they could choose a powerful 360 hp, 396 cubic inch motor ready to rock and roll. The engine also had dual exhaust with a better suspension system. Overall, this car provided better performance. With the L34 motor, the 1966 Chevelle Super Sport would travel from 0 to 60 mph in 7.9 seconds from a cold start.

The 1966 Chevelle is a very popular classic muscle car. The design and style still looks excellent today and is instantly identified as a beautiful classic car by aficionados and non-enthusiasts alike as a breathtaking muscle car.
