Identifying Your Classic Muncie Transmission

Several things are needed to identify a Muncie 4 speed transmission correctly. Muncie transmission identification the first is a main case casting number. Most Muncie 4-speed main cases, extension housings, and side covers have a casting date code stamped into the side. If you are looking for this code, you can usually find it on main cases on the passenger side of the case just below the casting number. Also if you are looking for the extension housing code, you can find that very close to the casting number. It is important to keep in mind that Muncie casting date codes are not done the same way as they are on other transmission manufacturers. In the Muncie transmissions, you need to look for the code that is made up of two circles. Each circle with be approximately a half inch in diameter & will be divided in two. On the Muncie four speed transmission, you will notice that one of the circles is called the date marker, while the other one is the status marker.

Next thing to do in identifying your Muncie transmission is to count the input & output shaft splines. Look for any kind of rings or grooves, count these and take note of them. I recommend you take plenty of good digital pictures for your own records and even for asking for help online.

The third thing that you can look at in identifying your Muncie transmission is to look at the vin numbers & date codes. This helps any classic car transmission restoration technician know that the case and gears match. It is important to keep in mind that the tooth can tell exactly what the gear ratio is. I will say this, if you are not familiar with working on a Muncie transmission that you either need to ask the advice of a professional or take your transmission to a certified transmission shop. Let them know what you want and make sure that the transmission is restored to original condition.

307 Engine

Looking for a 307 engine? This engine is a very popular motor. Also called the Chevrolet Small-Block engine. A 307 cu in (5 L) version was produced from 1968 through 1973. Engine bore was 3.875 inches (98.4 mm) with a 3.25-inch (82.6 mm) stroke.

The 307 replaced the 283 in Chevrolet cars and produced 200 hp (149 kW) SAE gross at 4600 rpm and 300 lb·ft (407 N·m) of torque at 2400 rpm in the 1960s. The later emissions-modified versions produced just 115 hp (86 kW) SAE net, giving the engine one of the lowest power-per-displacement ratings of all time.

Chevrolet never produced a high-performance version of this engine, though they did produce, for Outboard Marine Corporation, a high-performance marinized 307, rated at 235 hp (175 kW) and 245 hp (183 kW) SAE gross, depending on year, that shipped with the Corvette/Z-28’s cast aluminum valve covers and Rochester QuadraJet carb. Chevy also built other versions of the chevy 307 engine rated with 307 engine specs at 210 hp (157 kW), 215 hp (160 kW) and 225 hp (168 kW) SAE gross.
