1992 GMC S15 Sonoma Truck Exhaust Manifold

Posted by Classic Car Parts on Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

The number and design of the exhaust manifolds depend on the cylinder heads to which they are attached. To maximize efficiency in gathering exhaust fumes from each individual exhaust ports on the cylinder, the right manifold must be installed. Engines that are linear use a a single exhaust manifold. In contrast, v-shaped engines come equipped with two exhaust manifolds, and each one is mounted to each piston cylinder head. Common materials used to make exhaust manifolds include cast iron, tubular steel, or even lightweight aluminum. Sometimes they are coated with ceramics.

Exhaust manifolds are generally simple cast iron exhaust system parts which bring together motor smoke from many cylinders & distributes it to the exhaust pipe. When an motor starts its exhaust stroke, the piston moves high up the piston cylinder, decreasing the total volume of the piston chamber. With the exhaust valve open, the high pressure exhaust gas exit into the exhaust manifold or header, creating an exhaust pulse.
