History of Triumph's Spitfire

Many people call it the "Bomb", and it was very popular for its sporty style The Triumph Spitfire is a classic car that was a small sportscar that was a spin off of the Standard Triumph design. In fact this automobile was a direct variation of the Herald saloon model.

The Triumph Spitfire was introduced in 1962 and there were 5 different models produced, the Mk1, Mk2, Mk3, M4, & the 1500 models. Overall, there was over 314,000 Spitfires produced by Triumph. The Spitfire's production halted after the 1980 model year. The 1980 model was the last model built as well as the heaviest one at 1,875 pounds. This car was developed in response to the competition with the Austin-Healey Sprite.

The car had a standard 1493 cc Straight 4-cylinder in the US. The Spitfire 1500 model was a more powerful model, however it was not sold in the US. This car's design was based on reducing the length and width of the chassis to shape it into a sports car. So in other words, it saved Truimph the cost of developing an entirely new chassis if they took the chassis of the Herald and resized it.

Throughout its life, the British-based Spitfire was built at the Standard-Triumph works at Canley, Coventry.
